Charters
We have not raised our rates in the past 6 years but unfortunately due to the steadily increasing cost for slip rental, insurance and equipment we have made slight increases for 2009. We will continue to have fuel surcharges for our offshore trips as necessary. However, we have reduced the surcharges for 2009 as a result of our rates showing an increase. If fuel exceeds $3 per gallon at the dock we will charge the amount of the fuel price above $3 to the client. For example, a tuna trip may require using 75 gallons of gas and if gas is selling for $3.50 the client would be charge and extra $37.50. We have a digital fuel flowmeter on our boat which is accurate to the tenth of a gallon. We refuel after every trip so are always sure of the amounts we use. There will be no surcharges on bass and bluefish trips this season. We feel that by using surcharges for fuel used we avoid feeling compelled to limit our travels to conserve fuel. Many charters are unwilling to travel great distances to catch fish because they are trying to keep fuel costs.
On our 8 hour trips and trips with younger children we prefer to have a mate on board to help make the trip as successful as possible. A good mate can often make the difference between a good trip and a great trip. Our mates do not get paid a salary and are compensated only by tips. Standard tips for mates is 20% of trip cost. We do not use mates on 4 hour trips unless requested or involving more than one younger child.
